What Are Natural Colored Diamonds?
What are Natural Fancy Color Diamonds?
Natural fancy colored diamonds are diamonds that exhibit intense colors naturally, without any artificial enhancements. Unlike traditional colorless diamonds, which are valued for their lack of color, fancy colored diamonds are prized for their vibrant hues. These colors can range from yellows and browns to rarer shades like pink, blue, green, and even red.
The color in these diamonds is usually caused by various factors during their formation:
Yellow Diamonds - Often colored by nitrogen impurities.
Blue Diamonds - Obtain their color from boron impurities.
Green Diamonds - Obtain their color from natural radiation.
Pink + Red Diamonds - The exact cause isn't fully understood but is believed to be due to distortions in the diamond's crystal lattice structure.
The rarity of the color and its intensity generally determine the value of a fancy colored diamond. The more intense and rare the color, the more valuable the diamond is. These diamonds are graded on a different scale than traditional diamonds, with the color being the most critical factor. The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) grades them based on the hue, tone, and saturation, with classifications such as Fancy Light, Fancy, Fancy Intense, Fancy Vivid, and Fancy Deep, among others.
